A small note: You could technically make this run in multiplayer. You could even have it so there's a REAL email/IRC clients running on everyone's desktop then have multiplayer games on the server. This is way out of the scope of a gamejam game but I laid out the framework for you to build upon. I'm sure you can do it! I believe in you.
